Best places to put a wine cellar in your home

Choosing where to put a wine cellar in your home may seem like an easy decision but there’s actually a lot to think about. We can custom-make wine storage solutions for almost anywhere in the home. Although possible, not every location is the best location. Before we look at the best places to put a wine cellar in your home, let’s understand what conditions wine should be kept in first.

Best conditions for wine storage

– Wine should never be stored within a fluctuating environment. Both heat and humidity can affect the wine and large variations can be damaging. We would always recommend storing wine within a temperature-controlled environment, especially for long-term storage. If your space changes a lot in temperature or humidity then we can integrate a temperature control system. This feature makes the storage of wine within places like the Kitchen a feasible option.

– Direct sunlight is also not ideal. When a bottle of wine is in direct sunlight, ultraviolet rays cause a reaction and amino acids to build within the wine, tainting the taste and smell. This isn’t a problem for basement cellars or wine rooms (as windows can be blocked). For feature wine walls, we would recommend not to place them in line with direct sunlight.

Basements and Cellars

Basements have been, for a long time, the chosen location due to their stable temperature. Champagne houses and wineries across the world have opted for basement wine storage, especially for their long-term storage. By keeping wine within an underground cellar, it can be stored with the reassurance that the temperature should not alter. For a stable atmosphere, wine should be stored at least 2-3 metres below the surface level. If you would like a wine cellar, our team will advise on whether the atmosphere is suitable. If not, we can recommend and install a suitable solution.

Hallways

Hallways have heavy footfall and if your hallway is wide enough, they make for perfect wine storage locations. Owning a wine collection is a proud achievement and many like to be able to view their bottles regularly.

Dining room

Not every home has a cellar or basement but every home has a dining room. Dining rooms are where you’ll be the most likely to consume wine so it makes sense to put it there. A wine wall creates a statement piece and the dining room instantly becomes a conversation starter – perfect for entertaining guests.

Kitchen

Similar to the dining room, the kitchen is a logical and convenient place to store your wine. We can custom-build units that integrate seamlessly into your units and cupboards to create something truly bespoke.

Living room

Every home has a living room waiting to show off a wine collection. The living room is a great place to install a wine wall.

Under the stairs

Chances are you have space under the stairs which is currently going unused. You can turn that space into a new home for your wine.

Garage

This isn’t a space people often associate with wine storage but garages (like cellars) are often cool spaces. With the correct storage to deal with the vibrations from the cars coming and going (which can negatively affect the wine), garages are perfect.

Closet or any unused room

Any unused space in your home can be reimagined into a wine closet. With a sprinkle of imagination, any room can be transformed – from offices to broom cupboards.
