A Grade 2 Wine Cellar

Project Overview

Located within the basement of a listed country property, this grand wine cellar has been thoughtfully reimagined to honour the building’s heritage while delivering exceptional functionality and tailored design. Once a working wine cellar with dated, off-the-shelf racking, the space lacked cohesion and failed to reflect the quality of the collection it housed. The previous joinery didn’t follow the contours of the room, leaving voids and awkward gaps against the irregular brickwork and curved alcoves.

Sorrells was chosen for this project specifically for our ability to deliver fully bespoke joinery, designed and crafted to follow the unconventional lines and dimensions of the room. With a brief focused on utilising every available inch, our team replaced the original standard racking with precision-built furniture that now forms a seamless continuation of the architecture itself.

  • 1,595 standard bottles
  • Shelving for additional bottles on display
  • Solid Oak throughout
  • Custom-built racking designed to follow irregular walls, alcoves, and historic brickwork

  • A maximum storage design for a high capacity collection

  • Crafted to utilise every available inch, including uneven and unconventional dimensions

  • Designed to respect the building’s listed status and architectural integrity – No structural changes made to the original brickwork or alcoves

Design Details

Every element of this cellar was made to measure. The walls, archways, and alcoves were far from uniform, typical of a heritage property, but through detailed site surveying and in-house manufacturing, Sorrells was able to produce joinery that fits flush against even the most irregular surfaces.

The final layout supports a diverse and extensive collection, with tailored racking designed for both maximum capacity and ease of access. The use of solid timber, finished in warm tones, complements the surrounding original brickwork and enhances the sense of depth and texture throughout the space.
