This wine cellar is located in the basement of a period property in Essex, where the client wanted to create a practical and well-structured storage space while preserving the character of the home. Sorrells was appointed to deliver a solution that would protect the existing interiors, make use of the naturally cool environment, and avoid the need for intrusive works or full-room climate control.
The cellar is constructed in redwood, with joinery designed to sit comfortably within the traditional setting. A Transtherm Loft unit was integrated to provide a dedicated temperature-controlled zone for the client’s fine wine collection, while the rest of the cellar benefits from the stable, cool conditions of the basement, ideal for short- to medium-term storage.
A variety of racking styles are used throughout, including standard bottle storage, angled display shelving, and flexible compartments for different formats, allowing the client to organise the collection efficiently. As a personalised finishing touch, Sorrells also designed and produced a set of custom wine cases, adding a practical and distinctive element to the room.
The basement wine cellar reflects a harmonious blend of traditional aesthetic and modern functionality. Located in a Grade 2 listed building in Essex, the cellar has been designed to store 500 bottles, taking full advantage of the vast basement area previously used for storage.
Given the client’s specific request to forgo additional temperature control systems, the cellar focuses primarily on storage capacity. However, for long-term storage of fine wines, a Transtherm Loft wine cabinet by EuroCave was incorporated into the design to maintain a stable temperature.
Contrary to the common belief that wine cabinets are for storing ready-to-drink whites, the Transtherm Loft by EuroCave serves a specialised role in long-term fine wine storage. Engineered to maintain a stable temperature, Transtherm cabinets are essential for allowing fine wines to mature correctly over extended periods. In this Essex basement wine cellar project, the Transtherm Loft cabinet was integrated to meet the client’s requirement for a stable temperature zone, thus ensuring the integrity of fine wines intended for long-term ageing.
The wine racking was made of Oak and was finished with a light oak stain to complement the traditional style of the property. The joinery has been crafted carefully to work around the pre-existing timber, preserving the space’s inherent architectural characteristics.
Our project team took special care to ensure that the new wine cellar did not disrupt the historical value and features of the Grade 2 listed building. Thus, every element, from the racking to the wine cabinet, has been integrated in a way that enriches the existing setting.
In conclusion, the basement wine cellar project stands as a testament to our specialised, client-centric design that melds effortlessly with the unique characteristics of a heritage property in Essex. Our experience extends to working with older properties where preserving and respecting present features is paramount. Our project team is adept at not just accommodating but also restoring and improving interiors, ensuring that each project not only meets but enhances the existing architectural and historical context. This approach allows us to deliver a wine storage solution that is both functional and in harmony with the property’s inherent charm.
